The FangYuan TaiChi Centre - Wu Yu Ping

The Fang Yuan Tai Chi Centre

The Fang Yuan Tai Chi Centre

The Fang Yuan Tai Chi Centre is a new Chen Style Tai Chi training centre opening up in Jie Yang City, Guangdong Province, not too far from Guangzhou and Shenzhen with the intention of teaching high quality Tai Chi to both Western and Chinese students.

The head teacher Master Wu Yu Ping has run the Traditional Tai Chi School in Yangshuo for many years alongside Wu Heng Dong and is very experienced in teaching Western students. His English is excellent which makes the learning process much easier.

He offers a complete Chen Style training environment suitable for international students to progress from complete beginner to competition level.

Master Ping also teaches an extensive Qi Gong programme and is now adding Mindfulness meditation sessions and some softer Yang Style Tai Chi allowing the school to meet the needs of students who would benefit from this gentler training.

About the Teacher

Wu Yu Ping ( Master Ping ) is from Jieyang City, Guangdong province. He is recognised as a Taichi Master, Level 6 in the Chinese Wushu system. He is a co-founder of the Yangshuo Traditional Taichi School.

Master Wu Yu Ping

In his own words : "When I was young, I loved the martial arts. I started when I was 9 years old. I have been practicing primarily Tai Chi, for 24 years now; I leaned the whole of Chen Style - forms, push hands, weapons and theory - from Master Lin JianXing. Later I learned from Masters Wang FuJing, Wang LaiQin, Wu MingQiang and Xu Yakui in order to deepen my understanding of Tai Chi."

Wu Yu Ping continues to develop his understanding of Tai Chi and often travels around China to study and share with different masters and tai chi practitioners.

He has entered many competitions and has won 18 gold medals so far. He is also proud to have received a certificate of excellence in coaching, from Guangdong sports center; following his students' successes in competitions. In recent years he has also travelled to Belgium and France to share his Tai Chi knowledge.

I have known Wu Yu Ping for about ten years now. He is a warm and friendly Tai Chi teacher able to offer high quality Tai Chi training. I attended a Beginners Qi Gong class with him recently and was really impressed. With his fluent English, clear understanding of Chen Style Tai Chi and years of experience teaching international students, it really felt professional and well done.

School Details

The school is offering twice-daily two hour-long training sessions five days a week, leaving the weekends free for students to relax, integrate their learning and explore the local attractions, local culture and nature.

A typical day starts with morning meditation for those who wish to join.

Classes are offered on a small group basis, usually start with stretching exercises, followed by Qi Gong and Tai Chi practice according to the student's level.

All levels from beginner to advanced of Chen and Modern Yang Style are offered.

I would recommend checking the latest prices with the Fang Yuan Tai Chi Centre

Currently they are US$799.20 for two weeks training and US$1349 for a month as there are some offers available which will no doubt change over time. I think I would contact them about prices during this period of uncertainty.

The prices are for 20 hours of Tai Chi tuition per week, some daily meditation sessions and include full board and accommodation so this sounds okay. Hotel accommodation in China is rarely less than 150Yuan per night now.

Accomodation and Board

The centre is able to offer modern, comfortable accommodation and fees include three meals a day, catering to both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. I ate with the students at the Yangshuo school on many occasions and I'm sure the food will be great.

The China Tai Chi Guide is very happy to support this work. This is a new project for Master Wu Yu Ping, creating a second teaching centre in his hometown of Jie Yang and given the quality of the training environment he created in Yangshuo, I am sure this will also be a great place to learn Tai Chi.

"Good teacher which made the attraction worthwhile"

This place is the real deal. Myself and my girlfriend stayed at the school for 10 days, training mostly with Master Ping. Firstly the area - a peaceful and very beautiful spot, just outside of Yangshuo town (this is a very good thing, Yangshuo is pretty crazy and busy). Our room was basic but comfortable, and the food is really great - fresh cooked meals three times a day, with plenty of options. As for the training - excellent. I have a fair amount of experience with Tai Chi and Kung Fu, and Ping is both a talented practitioner, and a brilliant teacher. His English is very good, and he can both explain and demonstrate everything you need to know, and answer any questions you have (something that is pretty rare even with teachers with first language English). The training was varied and deep, we learned a lot about Qi Gong, Meditation, and martial arts applications, as well as the relationships between Chinese Medicine and Tai Chi. Ping is also super friendly and welcoming, and the kind of guy you immediately feel comfortable with.

The quality of teaching is very high. Both master Ping and master Kim are very dedicated teachers. They are very helpful to improve your tai chi level, whether you're a beginner or advanced student. They pay attention to a lot of details that make you understand the Tai Chi in a deeper level and one can truly feel their passion for Tai Chi. The atmosphere is lovely and peaceful, the surrounding beautiful. If you're looking for an authentic experience you should definitely come here!

A Selection of Older Testimonials from before 2019

I first went to the school for three weeks in 2016. I was so impressed that I decided to return for 2 months in 2017. What is really impressive about this school is not just the level of Tai Chi expertise of both masters, but perhaps even more the quality of their teaching. Unlike some schools, they do not leave the teaching to assistants, and they invest themselves very strongly in their students' success. Teaching is an art in itself, and both Master Kim and Master Ping are very fine teachers. The other feature I would highlight is the atmosphere of the school. There is a real feeling of collective spirit, of welcoming, of learning together, which you get from the students as well as the teachers. If you want to learn Tai Chi in China, then this is the place to come.

When i came to Yangshuo, i met several people who suggested me not to stay too short time in this beautiful place and to take my time, if i really want to learn Taichi...i didn't want to, because I wanted to travel around China. But in the end, i enjoyed it so much, that i stayed - and once i wanted to travel further, i extended my stay - again and again until my last day. It's not only Taichi, the living in this great traditional building, the delicious food and the great location in the quite and beautiful Villige close to the river. It was more the way, Kim and Ping are teaching and acting. They both are such great persons, help wherever they can, try to do their best to let you get as much knowledge about Taichi, kungfu, Qigong and chinese culture en general. They are amazing and i really love their way of humor :) it made me feel like i was at home. and some day, i will and need to go back to this "home" :) i'm looking forward to see you very soon! :o) THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Well what to say, I think that just by saying that I am back a year after beeing here last year three months, everything has been said. Not only the good teachers, but the nice feelings I could get thanks to everything I was thaught in the yangshuotraditionalschool. This year I came for another two months to improve my Tai Chi and Qi Gong and the lovely feelling I get with it. That made me decide to become hopefully a Tai Chi teacher so I can teach other people to feel so good and healthy. I recomed to anyone who is thinking to try it or it is not sure if do it or not, and if you decide to do it in Yangshuo, do not hesitate to come to meet Kim and Ping (not only good teachers but people you can trust) and their facilities surounded by a beautyful landscapes.

I came to China a year ago and have studied Tai Chi with a number of Masters. Without a second thought Masters Kim and Ping are by far the best. As Tai Chi is both a martial art and a philosophy Kim and Ping strike a perfect balance between theory and Technique.

They have an amazing ability to gage your limits, explaining short comings in a clearly, efficiently and most importantly in English. From all the students I have spoken to from advance to beginner all have stated how much they have gained from studying with these two dedicated Masters.

The school is beautiful and in perfect harmony with its surroundings, more importantly the two Masters are some of the nicest people I have ever met. I can truly recommend this not just for the dedicated Martial artist but as a genuine China experience.

The best thing I have done in China by far!

China Tai Chi Guide Testimonial Policy & Disclaimer

Student testimonials may be provided by the schools themselves or submitted directly to the China Tai Chi Guide. In either case it is difficult for the China Tai Chi Guide to verify their accuracy.

My choice is to include positive, balanced, testimonials only. Obviously every school will have some negative ones also, but what is taken from the experience is influenced by how one works oneself with what is offered. If a school has too many bad ones, I will simply remove it from the directory.

The testimonials provide some kind of feel for the school and people's individual experiences and if there are sufficient positive ones, then this seems a reasonable measure for the general quality that the teacher is offering.
